Went on a service call last Friday in Seattle. A lady had a DR2 that was sick. Model# D2A16. I grabbed my service valve adapter and was going to check pressures ect. and it wouldn't screw onto the float service valve. It seemed to be the right external size, but the thread pitch seemed different, and it would only go on about 1 turn. After taking a close look it seems that the thread pitch was indeed different. I didn't have my thread pitch guage with me but it looked like the threads were more coarse than I have seen before. Anybody seen this before?

The DR manual specifies one size of adaptor for all DR's, and the listing of charge valves in those hermetic adaptor kits also shows only one kind for GE. I wonder if any of the other adaptors in those kits would fit. What was the fault with the DR2?

I've had a look through all the adaptors in my kit. There's nothing almost the same as the GE adaptor with a different thread pitch. In fact, it seems quite a few manufacturers use the same adaptor thread.

If the wrong adapter wasn't used in the past to damage the threads sounds like it should have fit.I know its is a DR and would not have ever been r-12 but I wonder if the CK models that were R12 could have had a special thread to keep them from getting mixed up. Still would not explain this DR though unless there had been a float transplant done in the past. Plus as from what you are seeing cablehack there is only one GE adapter in the kit.

I'm beginning to think it was damaged in the past. luckily I just ended up replacing the heating element.

Did you use one of the new stainless heaters? My 1/2 inch diameter heaters fit in the DR's that I have

No I used one of my homemade heaters on that one. I will try one soon though.
