Some of the deep-woods rural areas here were very late to get REA electricity. I saw one of these still in use 50 years ago. There was a (what I took at the time to be 24 volt DC judging from the batteries) "Delco plant" on a cement slab in a shed, and a DC refrigerator in the house, with the condensing unit remotely located in the utility room, it had a metal mesh cover over it instead of being open like the photo. It made a sort of "wump, wump, wump, wump" noise when it ran. The Delco plant was particularly clever in that it didn't run all the time, only when it sensed an electrical load.
