Hi David, Your suspicions were correct. It's drawing almost 14 amps on startup. I have two other 50's fridges and they are only drawing 3 amps as you recommend for start up. What do you suggest next or am I finished with engines? Thanks, Bruce

There is really no way around having to rewind the motor stator if the motor is still drawing 14 amps even when the relay is manually disengaged from start position. It should draw around 10 amps for a half second or so, and then decay down to about 3 amps as the compressor starts.

Now that you mention it I don't think it came off the start relay when I tested it...let me try it again.

Yes, you need to let it start with the start winding engaged, then disengage the start winding by pressing down on the lever that lifts the start contacts (with an insulated poking device). You need to make sure the compressor starts and doesn’t stall out. The reading should be taken once the compressor is running and the start winding is not on.

Ok...finally got around to testing it again with the start relay disengaged and it is still drawing 11.99 amps. Call the Junk Man?

If you aren't interested in pursuing it, might want to try offering it to other forum members for parts or repair. The hardware and parts should be saved to keep other examples working, so calling the junk man is a bad idea. Sincerely, David

David, If I gave you my POC info could you list it for me? I would let it go cheap $80 if you think that's a fair price. I'm located near Roanoke, Va. and already have it listed on FB for $100. Thanks, Bruce

David, On another note what would be your approximate price to fix it if I trailered it down to you? Thanks Bruce

Isn't Gill Colwell Sr. still with us? I think he rewound several DRs. Knowing the motor technology of the day a rewind should be better than new.

Does anyone know the location of Gill Colwell Sr. I might be able to deliver the fridge to him if he removes, repairs and installs the DR Motors. I'm near Roanoke, Va. Thanks, Bruce

I am still alive! But working way too much too keep people warm. I am near Peoria Illinois. I have rewound 2 stators before but it wasn't cheap and this DR is probably welded shut. It would be pretty expensive to pay some on like me to rewind and weld shut again.
