That's great info I will need to study further. I do know I would love to have an LK but NOW I want a combo unit even more. I will be in trouble if that shows up near me next.

I just recently aquired the following.... GE Type LK-1-B16 Refrigertor
I have plans to turn this into a cooler or my back porch, but I wanted to see if anyone could help me to value the unit. I found it in a barn & it's in pretty bad shape.
What I want to avoid is possibly damaging something that is rare...my hunch is it is not rare, but again I want to make sure. Thanks, in advance, for any help here.

The LKs may be kinda rare today. I am not sure how many were made to begin with but I don't think a lot are left. If it still cools and works I would be trying to keep it original myself. It uses SO2 refrigerant so most service techs won't touch it. For this reason and the fact it is in "rough shape" its value isn't very high. Would love too see a pic.

The insulation is probably corrugated cardboard (pretty decent if kept dry, but turns to mush if wet).

The LK is quite rare. I don't know of anyone in this forum having seen one for real, let alone any pics except for manuals, advertisements, etc. Evidently there was a design fault where the evaporator was too small. A modified evaporator was installed in rebuilt models. All of these prewar GE fridges should be kept in a dry environment. The corrugated cardboard insulation (Thermocraft) loves to absorb moisture, and that results in a cabinet rusting from the inside out.

Hey Guys....sorry for my delayed response after you all responded so quickly.
I have 5 pictures of the LK unit I referenced however I cannot figure out how to attach them here.
Is there an e-mail address I can send them to, or can someone tell me how to attach using this site? When I am posting, I am posting a quick reply to this post as I am not registered.

Jason You'll need to register first. Then, click on "Reply" (top right corner of the message box on the blue border) instead of "Post Quick Reply" and all the formatting and attaching menus become available.

Very nice! It's the first time I've seen one outside the advertisement drawings. Looks very restorable too.

I want one too. It does look restorable. I was just cleaning my storage bin this afternoon. I can make on fit somewhere.

Thank guys. We were originally going to gut the coolant equipment and punch a hole in the bottom of the bin to install a drain hose for the cooler. I am going to modify my original plans, as I will not do anythng to daage the integrity of unit. This will provide the option of a true, full restoration at a later time. We'll leave everything in tact and I will just manually drain after each use. After we finish the job, I will post the final pic's of the backporch cooler. Our thoughts are to leave the aged look (patina and simply stop further corosion.
I think the untit looks cool just like it is. And there's a story to go along with it....I was helping a guy fix his barn roof, I spotted the untit and thought that would make a sweet looking cooler on my back porch, asked if I could purchase, initial response was no...then 3-4 months later I got a call asking if I was still interested and here we are.
Thank you for helping me out guys.

But then I have the equipment and experience to do so. Just be sure to keep it from rusting the inside or getting water leak into the insulation. Is the refrigeration system all in tack? If it has never leaked out the so2 a rewire may be the main thing needed. May need way more who knows. Do you have pics of the compressor area?

Lift tops are neat. A friend of mine has one. They're a big awkward to load though.

I sure would like to be able to see this Saleman's Bulletin, but the link will not work for me. It comes up with an error message, "This Page Cannot Be Displayed"
This is the same problem I was having with the links for the manuals that were at a similar address.
Thanks, Dave
