Hi All, I'm new to the group and was brought here by alot of informative videos I found on Youtube. I have a 1950 GM Frigidaire (MM-76) its been working flawlessly since I was a child. I have noticed in my area quite a few power fluctuations, power service interruptions that the power my just turn off then back on over a second or two, and power surges in which I've lost a TV and router. Can anyone recommend if protection is needed and if so what type. I'd prefer a unit that I can install at the wall outlet. I searched the forum the best I can looking for answers but can't seem to locate anything. I'm not sure if I'm searching correctly or not. Thanks in advance and allowing me to be part of your group.

Hi and welcome to the forum! I have two 1950 Frigidaire Deluxe models (DM-90P). Your Frigidaire has an overload incorporated into the compressor relay. If the compressor stalls and draws too much power, either when trying to start or while running, the overload will trip and shut down the compressor for a few minutes. Once the overload resets, automatically, the compressor will start back up again and run. This is assuming there's no problems with the compressor or relay. By what you're describing the compressor could stall if the power is interrupted for a minute or two because the pressure inside of the refrigeration system has not had enough time to equalize. These refrigerators are pretty robust. Not like the sensitive electronics in a modern TV or computer. It wouldn't hurt to plug the fridge into a surge protector but I really don't think it's necessary. Also, plugging it in to a fused power strip won't really offer much protection because most of them are rated at 15 amps. If the compressor stalls it will only draw about 4 amps, tops. You can see that information on the data plate that's near the compressor. I think your Frigidaire is safe the way it is.

Thank you Jake for your reply. Leaving the Frigidaire the way it is maybe the way to go. I could not find anything elsewhere showing a benefit otherwise. Your explanation on the start up cycle was helpful and it my have shown me why the refrigerator was cycling for a while before it appears to even itself out and run normally again. I had a instance where the power to the house would just shut off for a second or two then comeback on again. It happens quite a lot where I live for no reason at all. When it happened a few days ago it was sunny outside not a cloud in the sky. Thats what got me thinking if there was anything I could do to possible help take any strain going to the refrigerator. I'm running all original parts, including the relay.
