Just want to share some of the issues you run into with DR'S. This is a D-30-A16. when I got it home I put the refrigeration unit on a stand to check out. I let the heater warm it up for a day. First thing I checked was if it was even charged. I cracked the valve on the float open. Sure enough so2. So I put a the hermetic adapter and gauges on it. Started it up and getting pressure but no cooling. So, dead blow to the float a couple times and it started cooling. Same scenario for a number of days. After opening the valve on the float a few times I noticed it felt "spongy" as I would tighten it up. Strange because they usually bottom out and then you tighten them up which is maybe 1/8 turn at most. This float valve does not have a spring underneath the float to open if you screw the plug out 10 or so turns. So everytime i started it up, the same scenario. Couple of taps with the dead blow and it worked fine. Obviously there's a problem with the float. So I purged the so2 to the country air and removed the float. Took it to the shop and cut it open on a lathe. It was very clean inside but I noticed the rod that went thru the float was bent a little. Surmised this is probably the problem with the float.ill add a picture of the plug and see if you have the same analysis as me. Rod is a little to long and the screw in plug was causing it to "bow" where you tightened it up. From the amount of distortion on the end of the plug it has been opened and closed numerous times.let me know what your analysis is. I shortened the rod.

Here is a DR-2 FLOAT I cut open. Float moved easily from turning it over and over. This is a float value with a spring to open the needle valve when you open the plug far enough out. I pulled the plug completely out and it still dident open the needle valve. So I cut it open.this valve is sealed to the valve base with a low temp solder. I'm assuming 50/50 lead/tin. This was pretty common solder when I was a kid. So I heated the base so all the solder was melted and tried to screw the top off. Apparently its not screwed togather. If someone know how they are connected I would sure like to know. Ill post a picture of what the inside looked like when I cut it open and removed the top. Interesting that it dident have and appeared to never have had the rod that the float slides on. In this style of float the rod would have to be removed from the bottom of the float as it has 2 (punch wings) below the float to raise the float when you backed the plug valve out. Interesting.
