As you know I took possession of a 1952 International Harvester chest freezer a few months back. It came to me with a bad solid state state relay and wet insulation. I have it in my garage at home now and am trying to get it ready to go in the house and into daily use. After draining the water I could out of the cabinet and resealing the places I knew it got in at I have been using a larger desiccant drier to try to draw the moistener out of the fiberglass insulation. Not sure how I can tell if it is all dry inside but last night I ran a vacuum pump hooked to it for about 20 minutes. Only pulled down a few inches which might not remove much moisture but the oil in the pump never showed that it was turning milky like it does on a wet system. The oil and pump were very cold to start with so I anticipated if there was much moisture left it would condense into the oil pretty readily. Best I can tell the insulation might be pretty dry. I did also have a moisture indicator hooked up with the drier but since checked and see the moisture level would have to be real low (aprox 100PPM) or less to turn it green so it was kinda a waste of time I think. Made up a new wiring harness. Got the new start relay installed. Even though the original cold control was there and working a check of the points told me I didn't trust it for daily use. Not bad though, good old GE made the control in 1951 and it was still working. Tonight it should get its new Marrs control. Coldspaces

This old stuff is sure built industrialized. Is it R22 ? It would be interesting to see what performance is like. I know a guy that has an IH refrigerator, early 50s also. It still runs fine.

Yes it is R-22. Industrialized is a great description. The history I found on IH says that they got into the refrigerator business to bring commercial quality equipment to the farmers wife. After all they are femineered!

Yeah the same guy I know also has one of those refrigerators that has the door that swings both ways. I don't know the brand but it's really unique.

What is the difference between R-12 and R-22? I've always seen 22 in central air systems but never in cars or refrigerators, why?

Yeah the same guy I know also has one of those refrigerators that has the door that swings both ways. I don't know the brand but it's really unique. Like this Philco www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9ojr9epKkc Main difference is R-22 is higher pressure than R-12. I don't know if any refrigerators ever used it or not, can't say I ever heard of one. Some chest freezer were made for it. Not sure if it was only to help keep them from running in a vacuum or if it was also more efficient. Looks like it does pick up more BTU per lb. Installed the new control last night, My suppliers catalog lists it as a normal off of -7 and normal on of 9, real close to the original. After I installed it I found it is really normal off -5 normal on 4. I was not to happy as I already installed it. 9 degree differential may short cycle it. Coldspaces

Well it is in the house now. Over twice a big as my newer 5 cb ft. Why would anyone not what the old one? Wife is home but hasn't seen it yet. Gotta wash it out inside and plug it in latter after the compressor is good and warm. Coldspaces

Wow I thought she found out about it a long time ago! No she really doesn't use it much. If the boys or I are here she sends us down there.
