Hi, I'm new to monitor top fridges. I have an engineering background and am interested in learning how to refurbish them and get them running again to enjoy as a basement second fridge. I found one on Craigslist near me but I'm not sure what to look for in pictures, questions to ask, or what to expect for pricing. If it helps, this is the ad cincinnati.craigslist.org/atq/d/erlanger-1930-ge-electric-fridge/7419493798.html . The current owner has only had it 2 years, kept inside, never plugged it in. It looks to be in good cosmetic shape so I'm assuming why they seem to be charging a premium. Any help is appreciated as I get started. Thank you!

My opinion, it's missing racks and the chiller tray, so that's going to be an issue if you like things correct.
They may have plugged it in and aren't telling you everything, it's hard to say.
$425.... Yeah I'd go $100-150 tops assuming the compressor runs. You may get other opinions here. Travis usually knows the going rate for things.

The price is a little high, being it's in unknown running condition, however that is better than "known non-running" condition. I would try to talk them down to about half of that to be honest. There is a lot of info on our forum here. Look for info on checking the crankcase oil heater, first of all. That is a critical part of the machine and can lead to the compressor seizing up if the oil heater is not working. Once you get the heater working, allow it to warm up overnight before starting the compressor. The CA machines use a low-pressure refrigerant called methyl formate. It is one of the most difficult refrigerants to obtain, and there are very few if any proven and tested substitutes which are not also equally difficult to obtain. For that reason, be careful of the lines and be sure not to break any during transport. As you have probably read, the cooling unit just sits on the cabinet, by gravity. Any tipping of the machine will allow the top to fall off, damaging the lines. Once you get it home and see what it's doing; we can give more troubleshooting advice. Sincerely, David

Thank you both for your replies. I've found more CA-1s on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace. I think I will try to hold out for a CK model so I don't have to worry about possibly needing to track down methyl formate. I live just south of Cincinnati, OH in Kentucky if you know any members near that area who might have extras they'd be willing to part with.

The seller may be a shyster, or may be just mistaken - but you can NEVER trust a non running example of a CA no matter what narrative the seller gives. You got to remember many are just out there to make a buck, or cut their losses. That CA looks to be in great shape and I expect it has been in service until something went wrong. It even looks plugged in, in the pictures in the CL ad. CA's are very predictable in how they fail. The most likely true story is, that they used it for years, without ever taking care of the heater or purging NCG out of the system. It seized up and they know something went wrong. They are trying to maximize their money when the sell it; by insinuating that there is little to nothing wrong with it. They have probably called around and been told it can't be fixed.

Morning,
Sorry I am late to chime in. I have been very busy with the holidays. I responded to your classifieds add as well but I will here also.
I will echo the others warnings about this particular one especially at that price and being a CA. Not that CA machines are bad….just that they can be a little more fickle perhaps.
I am located near Lexington Ky. If you need help finding a monitor top and with any questions or concerns. I will message you my email address.
