All,
After working all summer on my CA B 16 I have finally managed to get this working . Its working great. I want to thank David, and Cablehack especially for all your time with me. I knew nothing about these, but determined to get this working. Here is my journey in a nutshell. This was my great grandmothers machine which they bought new.
Refrigerator was repainted and rewired on the outside only.
Machine worked until we were getting a shock when we opened the door.
We shut down the machine and it sat in a cold basement for years.
I inherited the refrigerator .
Moved it to my shop and the compressor was stuck.
Lifted the monitor top off the base to rewire the inside wires.
While lifting it off the line on the evaporter broke.
I soldered the line, filled it up with R-11
Replaced the heater cartridge. (very important)
Before jumping with with 220 I used a capacitor which did not work. I ended up frying the relay to the pin and it broke off.
Rebuilt the relay copper connector with a new piece of copper. Works fine now.
Completely rewired the underside wiring, which included new wiring to the thermostat as well as to the relay.
Used Davids advice and boosted it with a 220 jump (2 times) freed up and starting working.
Started to frost but would not go up the side tanks just a few ribs on the bottom of the evaporator
cut off the float seat valve (tried to repair it by watching davids repair video) put it back together and sucked a vacum and refilled with R11
Still would not cool and eventually stopped cooling totally.
Thinking it was the thermostat, i removed the temp knob and turned it counter clockwise to get it to cool.
Thermostat came apart. and broke
Removed thermostat along with the copper line to the evaporator
Rebuilt the broken plastic so I could get the knob for the temp setting back in place. (thank goodness for the completed teardown pics someone posted)
While doing all of this i was out of R11 by this time and was trying to find some more, asking questions about a subsititute. I found out that only R123 and R11 would work instead of methyal formate.
Tried to purchase Methyl formate. Sigma would not sell it to me , because I lived at a residence.
Converted to a capillary system. .028 with 28 in of tube.
Located some Methyl formate.
pulled a .30 vacuum
Boiled the oil overnight by using a 120 watt cartridge heater. After that was done I put back the new 12 watt heater.
poured 2.2 pounds of methyl formate into the charge port. (watched video)
Started up ... frosted fine.. works great. I have frost up the top of the left side and frost halfway up on the right side. Temp is holding to 31 degrees perfectly and cycling fine. Very quiet machine
****R11 i purchased was R11 solvent....it says to not use it as a refrigerant. After some bad information I used it anyway. Only worked for a few minutes, (why) because my new refrigerator expert in town said that is solvent and does not have enough to use it for refrigerant. The gases it emits gets evaporated off and eventually disappears....
I'm so happy that all of you helped me. I m grateful for this forum.. This is a great place for information. I look forward to answering questions from my long summer experience.
Thanks again
