Just got a new-to-me CA fridge! Been sitting quite a while and trying to get it going. Purged with pan of hot water in evap until I felt heat in float chamber. Ran all last night and had a temp of about 28f in fridge. Dial set at 3. Frost line in evap at bottom of header tank and only about one third of tank on right had frost near header tank. Shut it down for a bit to deice and when starting up again it frosted up fast and completely and compressor kicked off. Started up again and hasn't shut off since. Seems to not be getting as cold as it should. Could there be more NCG in system? Outer "shell" not as warm as when purging. Any opinions? Thanks ahead for any advice!

Two likely reasons for it not to shut off is if the area around where the thermostat sensing tube is clamped is not frosted, or if it is frosted, the evaporator is just not cold enough. Seeing as it has had a cabinet temperature of 28F, that would tend to eliminate a worn float valve as being a problem.
If the evaporator is not evenly frosted, especially around the sensing tube clamp, that does suggest there is still NCG in the system. Under load, such as with a pan of hot water in the evaporator, the frost line should be at least half way up both header tanks. An obvious thing, but is the oil heater working?

Thanks cablehack! Checked resistance at plug with machine switched off and I have nothing at all. Soooo it appears my heater is at fault. What is a good source for a replacement? Any chance of someone having a part number? Really looking forward to seeing this thing working great!

For the heater replacement, some details were given here monitortop.freeforums.net/thread/45/suppliers I don't have any experience with these heaters, since I made my own, but from comments so far they seem to be very satisfactory. I believe that one of the forum members bought a bulk lot some time back, and some of the newer CA owners have replaced theirs recently, so hopefully someone else can give more details.

I just got my first CA about two weeks ago. I spoke with Ben at Phoenix Thermal (see the last listing on the link above). I’m still waiting for my heating unit to arrive, but Ben is as nice as can be. I ordered the 15W. Let us know how it goes!

Keep in mind, since it ran all night if the evaporator isn't cold enough to trip the thermostat, it could still be cold enough to get the cabinet down to 28 degrees even with a bad float valve. From what I remember, my friend had told me the CA-2-A16 I'm using originally froze everything in it. I don't know what the conditions were that this occurred because it wasn't mine at the time.
