This just got me thinking, why aluminum screws on the textolite strips? Stainless was used for the evaps, surely stainless screws were cheaper than aluminum back in the 30s. Or brass which was readily used in fans, though IIRC, still suffers from corrosion with steel, just as aluminum does

Or brass which was readily used in fans, though IIRC, still suffers from corrosion with steel, just as aluminum does My 1933 and 1934 cabinets use I believe Monel screws. The 1933 evaporators use aluminum bolts. I'm pretty sure stainless steel was probably a small fortune then and I'm not sure where Monel fell but it's even more expensive than stainless right now. I believe stainless steel was very new then and there's a good chance stainless screws and bolts simply didn't exist. I suspect those aluminum ones were an off the shelf part. Also, even now stainless steel is a whole lot of fun to machine. I'm thread milling some 316 as we speak because tapping it just results in sadness. I'm betting those aluminum screws were very affordable compared to stainless and Monel. Of course, I guess there's also a chance no one realized the issues with aluminum and steel yet at that point. When did aluminum as a material become popular?

Do you guys re-use the good aluminum screws on the textolite strips, or just replace all of them as a matter of course? Also, if they are replaced would it help to put anti seize compound or wax on the threads to help keep them from corroding in the steel. Or would that not make any difference? I have a CK that I'm repainting for my nephew and now that I'm putting it back together I thought I'd ask about that one. Thanks.
