Patient: DR 2 A 16, s/n: 1372619 circa 1931-32.
History: Fired-up machine about a week ago. At first it rattled a bit ( crankcase heater probably dead ). After several hours, it quieted down, and ran quietly, and began to cycle on / off, probably about 2-3 minutes on, several minutes off ( I did not log the cycle times ). Had an original DR ice-tray in the evaporator, and the drip-tray 1/2 full of water. By that evening, evaporator had frost almost all the way up, ice cube tray frozen solid, and cabinet temp down to about 0 * F. I backed-off the temp control, to see if it would maintain 35-40 * F.
It seemed to run fine for several days...
Symptoms: Now it seems to be running a "fever"... cabinet temp is still between 35 -40 * F, but the top of the compressor dome feels really warm to the touch, almost too warm to hold the hand on. Frost-line on the evaporator is all the way up to the cabinet roof. The cabinet still contains only the ice-cube tray and the drip-tray 1/2 full of water.
I shut it down today for fear of damaging the RU by continuing to run it that warm.
Is this normal behavior for a DR, or is the poor beast indeed sick ?
Thanks,
Frosty Frank

Two things to help in the diagnosis are the cycling times and power input. A hot compressor is never right, nor are long run times and short off times. Looking in the manual, one possibility mentioned is a stuck check valve - see p64 to see if the symptoms match yours. I'm hoping jhigdon will chime in here - he's the DR repair expert.

Yes. The service manual for these is very well done and goes in depth. Is the door seal in good condition ? I also would record cycling times, and check evap temps if possible. It sounds like the cycling times were good initially.
