I recently picked up a CA-2-B16 that hasn't run in nearly 40 years. Not knowing anything about these, I plugged it in and turned it on before I loaded it into my truck...and I turned on right away and the evaporator started getting cold in short order. Shut it down and have not started it since - because I found this forum and read about the heater that needs to work to prevent locking the compressor up. So, I tested the heater and I get no draw on my Kill-A-Watt meter when plugged in and open circuit shows when I use my meter across the plug prongs. I see much discussion about where to source these heaters but the threads are mostly from 2013/2014. Is there an update to this? Where should I be looking and what should I order?
Secondly, I am assuming this machine will need a bleed once I get it going. I understand I need a .216 6-flute Bristol key but I also see some discussion about "old style" vs "new style" Bristol keys. Can anyone explain this? Where should I get this tool? I went to various sites reference in this forum and I see no mention of old/new style. Where can I get the appropriate key (screwdriver type, preferably). I have many Bristol keys in my tool box but they are all ancient (inherited from my Grandfather) and of course not the correct size.
I am searching eBay for the correct Imperial hermetic kit but that is literally like looking for a unicorn. If anyone has one of these kits for sale I would be interested!
Thanks for any help!
Dave

monitortop.freeforums.net/thread/1254/216-bristol-keyHello and welcome to the forum check this thread out and on same page is a good example of how to bleed out the ncg’s cartridge-heaters-nsi.com/. Here’s one suggestion for heaters I bought mine from Nordic sensors but there based in Canada there was some extra paper work. Look in the suppler section there are several and start checking them out .

Dave I very recently replaced the "oil conditioner" cartridge heater on my CA-2-B16. PTS has 12mm diameter 12W heaters in stock. It is slightly smaller in diameter, but fits. Part number is 20902. $33.00 in-stock. UPS shipping is $15.00, USPS $4.00. Contact information cut/paste from an email footer is: DAVE FARMERY PHOENIX THERMAL SUPPLY 844-787-4328 www.phoenixthermalsupply.com/sales@ptsheat.com If you want to save $11.00, USPS will work, just specify that when they seal the business envelope, that they encase the envelope in clear shipping tape. USPS (no doubt in their haste to harvest as many fraudulent mail-in ballots as possible here in the Godless and corrupt Commonwealth of Pennsylvania) destroyed the envelope on the first one they shipped. PTS recieved back a shredded, empty envelope as "Return to Sender". The photo of the shredded envelope that Ben from PTS sent me via email was comical... I wish I had a good way to post an image here, but once imagepost.org ceased operation, I don't really have a place to upload random photos to share... and I am rusty with forum html(ish) tags to directly post a the picture here anyways.

Dave There was a hermetic kit only a few days ago on eBay. And another about a week ago. Be patient, they do come up fairly regularly.

Thanks to all...yes, I picked up that hermetic kit on ebay and all parts were there except the .216 spline bit! The Bristol wrench/hex key was but the green-tipped GE bit is missing. I have a shot at another partial kit that has that bit so I should be set tool-wise soon. I’ll end up with two of the .216 Bristol wrenches. May be looking to sell one if someone here is in need of one. Thanks for the Phoenix thermal folks reference as I will get an oil heater on order this week.
My plan is to rewire and get in good running order this winter and handle the cosmetic paint and chrome chores when it warms up in the spring. My home paint booth isn’t heated so painting my projects usually gets kicked till warm weather starts.
Dave
Update: I now have a full set hermetic service kit and the heater is in the mail from Phoenix Thermal. Things are progressing.

Well if you or someone else is in need of a complete kit , I just recently picked up two incomplete kits , and have one complete kit now . You can pm me and we can work out the details.
But if all you need is the Bristol key I’d just order it . It’s new and inexpensive.
