I know some agree with flipping the dome/unit upside down...maybe it has/hasn't worked for some DR owners...but let's agree...when it's not cooling...or only partially cooling, like mine...then what's it going to hurt to try...right? So..couple days ago I flipped mine over...for the second time and left all night. I he next day I turned it right side up and plugged in for the heater to run all day and that night. This morning I decided what the hay....flipped her on and immediatly heard good sounds in the freezer... and noticed the compressor was really quiet! All good feedback. She is out of the cabinet and I never expected her to get down to 5° or below to cut off on her own...well.. she got to 4.8° and cut off! The dome was warm as we're the coils. I'm linking the video and pics. I hope this will help others with DR issues. Also keep in mind I replaced the heater cartridge with a 3.5" 40W heater. Good luck! DR video

Glad it’s working! It’s one of those things that sometimes works and doesn’t cost anything to try. Hopefully it keeps on working well .

I’m glad you had success. They can be very finicky. I do think a 40 W heater is rather excessive on a DR2. I’m only commenting on that because someone else will come behind you and say if it worked for 40 I’ll use 60 etc. etc. etc.

Being a 40W heater certainly heats things up quickly tho. I know some that use higher Wattage heaters with DR 3 machines etc. I don't believe any damage will come from higher Wattage...just my thoughts here.

What about using a heater with a built in thermostat? That way you can have high wattage for fast warm up, but it will only use as much power as necessary to maintain the optimal temperature.

There are self regulating heater in some compressors. They cut themselves to like 1/2 wattage when hotter. Don't think there are any small enough to fit but never checked.

Call me a nervous nellie or whatever you want but I’m trying to be respectful of the fact of these machines are 90 years old and are on borrowed time. We know these machines suffer from lack of cooling. We know these machines have a high side dome. And we know the insulation is cotton and is well past its prime at this point. I am also very aware of how labor-intensive and expensive it is to rebuild one of these so I’m not interested in trying to make more than fail for any reason.
