Really glad you got it running! The old DR's are such fascinating machines which very much have their own personalities. The evaporator in these is filled with a "freezing solution" which allows for high thermal mass. This gives long on and off cycles and minimizes start and stops. These machines are placed under more stress when first started up, since the freezing solution has a lot of heat which has to be removed. It seems that many of us like to avoid short-cycles where the unit runs but does not reach cutoff temperature. If started up, it should only be done so after the heater has worked overnight; and once started, it should be allowed to run until it's cooled down and cycled off. Repeated 5 - 10 minute runs without ever having a long run with full cooling are hard on them.
If the start-relay isn't dropping out, this can harm the motor. Be sure that it is working correctly. Some people have had success with stick-on wheel weights to calibrate the relay.
One potential cause of this is the higher voltages which are present today as opposed to the 104 to 110V which was in use back in the day.
Sincerely, David

Turbo...Thank you again for very useful knowledge of these DRs. Thanks - but I have to remind you much of my knowledge came from the folks here; as well as reading old literature.

I'm learning more and more as my collection grows. 25 yrs ago I started collecting soda machines and taught myself and learned to fix them....there was no internet to hop on and pull a video up. My first antique refrigerator was/is a 30s FEA top which I've used on and off for 25+ years...that's it in my profile pic. All I had to do was oil the fan motor every year! Very reliable systems.

What temp should the freezer get to before cut out of the thermostat? I've got the thermostat dialed all the way down. Thanks.

What temp should the freezer get to before cut out of the thermostat? I've got the thermostat dialed all the way down. Thanks. When I had Paul's DR3 in my shop for repairs, it would pull down to about 5°F before shutting off. The control had been run through the ringer a time or two, and definitely was not at factory calibration though.
Our most scientific member is probably Aaron (birkie) who has placed instrumentation and data loggers on his machines! Hopefully he can chime in.
Sincerely, David

Thanks Turbo. Im afraid to make any adjustments right now until I see if it will cut out on it's own.

Thanks Turbo. Im afraid to make any adjustments right now until I see if it will cut out on it's own. It should cool down and cycle off in less than an hour, I would expect. If the compressor dome is getting too hot to touch, it needs to be shut down and investigated.

So far...it's just been warm. I'll start it up again tomorrow and see how it does.... hopefully it will get cold enough to cycle off.

Nice find Davido. I also looked up Bluffton. You're NNE of me; I'm in Medina, in Bandera County. Small world to see someone else on this group that's also in Hill Country. And I concur - you hardly ever see Monitor Tops for sale here in TX. Though my DR1 Form F that I started using a few days ago came from Boerne, my closeset acquisition yet! Second closest was a $100 CK and cabinet from San Anton.
I'm interested in hearing more about your DR2. I have one I picked up for free from Wisconsin, but it stopped getting cold, so David (turbokinetic) might help me to get it working (and switch to R152a) in the future.

Hey Bandera! Nice to meet another Texan! Been to Arkey Blues a few times! I travel all over Texas and always look on FB Marketplace and CL to see any for sale on areas that I'll be in. I have Vintage Vending-Soda Machine Sales Co. And deliver machines all over when sold. Been doing this 25+ yrs! These old vintage machines/appliances are definitely a labor of love. Again....great to chat/meet you.
