Hey everyone! I’ve been so busy lately but seeing the work ethic that David has and his progress that he has made on his projects has made me want to start getting other stuff working. A long while back a friend of Travis’s gave me a couple of units out of the kindness of his heart. One of them is a 1934 CA size 1 form B. Can you believe that this unit has a working heater? I couldn’t. But it draws a healthy 15.5 watts. I had already tested this unit out and purged it before. Yesterday I decided to come back to this project. I powered it up in my cold basement after sitting for a day with the heater on. It rattled a little bit at first but then became silky smooth and quiet. I need to put more of a load on it! The evaporator got fully frosted fast and the condenser wasn’t even warm. I’ll have to do a more heated test later to see if I got all the NCGs out. This should be an interesting project because the paint is still in reasonable shape. This may be a great candidate for preserving its original patina. There are a few spots where there is no paint left but it’s nothing horrible. Some people would say it’s time for a paint job, and they wouldn’t be wrong...but I’m going to buff it up and see how it looks. I bet it will come out ok. I’m busy this week with preparing for an interview but I’ll try to make some headway on it and post some before and after shots.

Glad to hear you're finding the time to work on some of your machines! Eager to see the before and after

Hi Ray - happy that I was able to provide some motivation for you! Glad that the CA is working and looks like it may be able to be preserved in "original condition."
I haven't checked out the CA's from Travis yet, electrically, but see some signs that the one complete one (from vet clinic) has been burned.
Sincerely, David

Just wanted to give an update on this. I am snowed in today so I had a little bit of free time to work on the CA! I tried in vain to buff out the paint on it but I’ve decided that it really is too far gone. Sometimes dirt looks like rust stains and sometimes it’s just plain rust. There must be a pound of tar on it too. Yummy, come on over to flavor country. So this one is going to need a new paint job. That’s ok though. The good news is that only after a few minutes of being on it got the evaporator nice and frosty! I think it might need another purge session. I’m going to work on that today. I think this will make a fine little unit once it looks nice though.

Wow at being snowed in. That really bites and reminds me why the deep south is a great place to live. But, on the positive side, at least you do have time for project progress!
I am still amazed and pleased with how well my formerly seized CA ran after its breaking free, purging, and running-in a few hours. Just make me happy. Hard to explain, but I think most of us here really understand this without any explanation needed.

It’s all about taking something broken and fixing it! It’s much better when you don’t have to open it up.
