This weekend I'm checking out this DRA2: www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/230192461068271/They are willing to negotiate on the price. The cabinet needs a little work (why do they paint over everything, including the trim?), but at least it has all shelves. Notably, it has a lot of fins, has a DR-1 style evaporator, yet retains the tall control. I think those we're all rebuilt machines, having suffered some sort of failure in the early '30s. Too bad it doesn't have an "icing unit" badge. It is cute, but slightly strange!

Man that is beautiful... I hope you can get it for cheap.... The lowest they'd go is still higher than I'd like, but it is relatively close by and kind of unusual. Plus, I couldn't really stop thinking about it.

.... I couldn't really stop thinking about it. That's reason enough to go get it.

Even with the extra paint, which will be easy to get off. It's just a great looking fridge...

That's a nice litle DRA. Just be sure you flip over that top shelf when you get it.

So I ended up looking at the machine, but decided to pass for the moment. It ended up the lowest they'd go was $400, and I wasn't too enthused that that they mentioned it was in "perfect" condition (obviously untrue from the photos), yet glaringly obvious was the broken control backbone, the painted-over porcelain damage, crooked door (opposite of the pull of gravity, as of over-compensating for sagging), and the well worn door hardware. All fixable, but this combined with the rain, and general exhaution made me not in the mood for such a transaction.
As far as the machine's history, it has been working continuously as a portch fridge since 1974 or so, reliably serving cold drinks on hot summer days.
The machine sounded a little metallic when running, but an ohmmeter confirmed its heater didn't work. Windings measured OK to ground, but one never knows.
I really liked the fins on it, though. It really is attractive, especially on such a short machine that invites looking at it from above. But I have a lot of in-progress projects, and it didn't seem the right thing to do at this moment

Hi Aaron. It's a shame you weren't able to get this one. But, in reading what you saw compared to what the seller said - I also would have passed on it. That price seems a little out of line considering what it needs.

Sounds like it is well worn if it has been used on a porch since the 70s. Just goes to show that there are some units which can take a lot of use and abuse but it always catches up to it in the end.
