I would have sent it to you. My plan was to take pictures and put it back on ebay after seeing the pictures of the '41 tray today. I'll post up what I'm bidding on in the future so we don't get in a bidding war. Are you bidding on the release tool? Let me know and I'll drop my max bid. Let me get the other one that I have and see how it compares. Is there any significance to the number of ribs in the bottom of the chiller tray? The '38 has 8. The '41 has 12. The other one that I have has 6. The ribs feel the same in shape between the 2. If you can use this one, its yours. Lessons learned remind the seller to double box repeatedly.

Mach,
I've bought many and so far, none have been damaged. Most are heavily wrapped in bubble wrap and then that is wrapped within the same box.
I might just be getting lucky.

Thanks Travis. I'll let the next seller know...once I find the correct tray.

This is how the first one I bought through eBay arrived: It was actually packed pretty well. Also, the owner of the bakery with the CK told me theirs came with one that they dropped when they brought it home. So those two plus Herb's and the one in this thread make 4 that I know of that have been broken in just the last few years. This makes me think they are only going to get rarer and most likely, more expensive.

Finally got my data logger running. I've got temperature, humidity, decibels, and watts. Top chart is temperature, middle is humidity, and bottom is decibels and watts. Humidity looks to be less than useful due to condensation. I let it run for about an hour and looks like its running about 5 minutes on and 5 minutes off the last half hour that it was running. The sound data is messed up due to me moving stuff around while it was running and the power usage was only set to sample at 5 minute intervals. I'll increase the sampling to 1 minute intervals for the next baseline.

Very nice datalog there! I have to ask what were you using to record the data? I deal with PLC programs with historical data functions that can make similar charts, but I don't have anything at my home shop to do that sort of charting.

Arduino Mega with a bluetooth 1Sheeld using an phone as the data logger and decibel sensor. The watts are measured using a tweet a watt with energylogger running on a laptop. The temp sensors are DS18b20 from ebay - the temp & humidity sensors are AM2315. The charts I'm making in Excel. The 1Sheeld does most of the heavy lifting for data logging.

Thanks for the information! Will look into those components for sure.

I'd recommend no less than a 10 second sampling interval for the power consumption, as it allows you to accurately determine the average power draw over a typical cycle. Once you have that, then it's easy to calculate the average power consumption by measuring the on/off duty cycle and multiplying by the average watts. I've found that method to be remarkably easy and accurate. The evaporator temperature measurements seem a bit high; it almost looks like they approach 32F. Looking back at some of my own (hand-logged with pencil and paper) data, it looks like the evaporator temps on the CK and flat top push 28F (at a cabinet temps of 35-36), which is higher than I remembered so your results actually don't seem too much out of line with that. I measured temps with a probe frozen to the center of the bottom section of the evaporator. It's interesting how much colder the interior of the DR pig evaporators gets compared to the stainless steel CK-type evaporators (it seems normal for the DRs to get down to 1-2F near the end of the cycle. The temperatures of the outside surface of the DR evaporator are much more in line with CK; teens to upper/mid 20s). Do share the results at some point once it has stabilized.

I believe the energy logger software does the averaging. It's sampling every 2 seconds and logs at defined frequency with 1 minute being the highest frequency. The 18b20 sensors are taped to the evaporator. I'll rerun another trial tonight for a few hours.

That's so much less painful than doing it by hand if possible (i.e. if they're sealed from the environment in plastic or epoxy), I'd pour a little water over the sensors to freeze them to the evaporator.

Nice fridge mach! Glad to see another prewar CF still kicking! I just got my 39 back up after a thermostat/switch replacement. My two cents on your so2 decision is this: I pulled my 39 out of a junkyard and it doesnt leak. Sulfur should be blatantly obvious to any human who hasnt knocked out their sense of smell like i have (my fiance confirms the no leaks thing in case you wondered).
I was curious if you got rid of those extra trays? I need one for my 39. Thanks for doin some legwork on tray identification too! It is a shame so many peoples trays have broken in shipping.

I've still got the 6 rib one pictured above and the broken ones. Not sure it's correct for a 39. I'd be curious to find out when the jadeite/vaseline glass ones were period correct. I noticed one shown in the artwork on this site`s headers. I'm a sucker for radioactive glass.
I pondering possibly that I'd glue and make a cast of the 38 but that's pretty low on project priority list right now. For better or worse, I pulled the trigger on the other fridge with intact 41 tray. Let the sickness begin 😁.

Speaking of glass, I've been watching ebay for a water bottle from the 1941 sales video without much luck. I found two of them on Etsy in the same day. I haven't seen anymore since. The makers mark looks like Anchor Hocking.
