OK guys and gals, this one is so cute that it makes me want to punch a baby seal for being comparatively ugly. A while back Travis found a 1936 3 cubic foot Frigidaire for sale in the St Louis area. It was only $25! The last thing I needed was another...blah blah blah. So I nabbed it. The lady who sold it was very sentimental about it. It had been in her family since new. It had developed problems and was beyond her and her husband's skill sets. I took a look at it and immediately realized that the thermostat was at fault. It's kind of easy to tell when one of the contacts still hooked to a wire is hanging in the cabinet. The contacts had worn down to nothing over the years. It caused them to arc and the Bakelite cover melted and broke. There was no saving that thermostat. I decided to gamble on it since it was so cheap and there was little possibility of anyone else saving it. She was thrilled that I got it since I told her I would show her once I got it fixed and that she could even come to see it if she wanted to. Flash forward a few months to now. I just visited Gill, coldspaces, and he just so happened to have a thermostat that exactly matches it. Actually, Travis had given him a spare thermostat due to Gill trying to fix a model that is just like mine. What are the odds? Slap in the thermostat, change the wiring, and low and behold it works. In fact it just cycled off as I started writing this. As any proper Frigidaire aficionado can tell you, these meter miser compressors clatter. It's not a terrible sound but it's not near as refined as a similar GE or Westinghouse. This one seems to be a little louder because the compressor is out in the open. I'm going to message the previous owner and tell her that all is well. Here is a video I made of it starting up. Yes, it is that loud at first. drive.google.com/file/d/0B8_jm7K-ahMaNGl0eWc4U0t3bG8/view?usp=drivesdk

Very nice Ray Have a 37 frigidaire it looks like yours but the badge on front-says fridgedare and also has GM on it . But the inside looks like yours and it is complete including chiller tray . It runs and just barely starts to get cold and that's it . It well run forever and not get cold assuming it's low on charge which Leeds me to believe there is a minuet leak somewhere . But didn't find a mfg. tag on it saying what referents it uses or how much? Like the ball top .

Gill will tell you and I've read before that these old meter misers ran too hot. Sometimes they would cook moisture out of the cotton winnings. This would lead to water freezing up at the cap tube. What I heard is that you can wrap a hot towel on the capillary tube where it goes into the evaporator. That should melt the water and cause it to start cooling. Give it a try! These units also take a LONG time to get cooling. They use a high side dome and the oil has to warm up before they will do any pumping. And if yours is low on gas it takes R114. Lucky you, now that we know that R124 works great, it is a direct replacement for R114.

Besides, you have one just like it that needs a refrigerant transplant. Yours was the one I was thinking of when I thought about moisture issues. I do greatly appreciate the thermostat though!

After about 30 minutes it gets going good. I really do think it's due to the high side dome arrangement. Oh, and I sent her the video this morning. She was tickled pink. She loved the fact that she got to hear that familiar sound again. I love making people happy. She said it went to the right person and I am proud to take care of it!
