It would be a lot of hard work but I think that the old posts could be transferred to a new forum.

Maybe we need an area where these new members can post before being let loose? The only reason it would be a lot of work to clear out the useless topics is that we’ve never done it before now. I’ll sit at work tonight and spotlight numerous examples. This was by far the most surreal one to me.. and it's in the reference section for goodness sake! monitortop.freeforums.net/thread/1128/call-monitor-back-glass-doors

I’ll sit at work tonight and spotlight numerous examples. That would be a good idea. Lock them into a specific thread for a predetermined post count. Then maybe you will know they are serious. Purge that thread regularly.

You may be able to start the purge by filtering users by post count and delete those users and posts under a certain number?
As an aside I had to post this so I would hit post #100 and become a full member!😂

As good as the idea is, unfortunately the forum software doesn't seem to allow any kind of filtering for posts. Without sounding dictatorial, I'd like a drop down menu that forces posters to go to the correct section before posting or making an enquiry; "Enter model number from the following menu..." at which point the poster is taken to relevant section, and the post can be compiled and entered. Perhaps it's my Apsergian way of thinking, and the love of compartmentalising things, but I think it's important to have model specific discussions in their relevant section. So, for example everything specific to the DR is in the DR section, and not in the General section. I must admit to having not being vigilant for some time, with moving threads into their correct section, but on that note, I've just gone through the General section and moved a lot of model-specific posts to where they ought to be. I've also deleted some meaningless old posts that had no replies or were old classifieds on CL that are well and truly irrelevant now. As time permits I'll get to the other sections.
Aside from that, compared to other forums I've been on over the years, I'd say this is probably the most orderly and civil of all of them. There's always going to be lazy new posters who suddenly just got a Monitor Top, can't be bothered looking, and expect an answer now. There was such an example not too long ago, where the information was clearly in the first sticky post of that model's section. At the same time, one cannot be too harsh and scare away potential enthusiasts.

They seem to be primarily javascript-based. It looks like it may be possible to, say, create a popup for new users with a quiz or questions that will direct them to the right forum. I'm a software engineer. I hate javascript and typically don't do browser/UI stuff, but could take a crack at some plugins if the admins can articulate the desired behaviour.

Very neat ideas. I couldn't have said it better Cablehack.
I can't code at all but I do know that Java sucks. Coffee is fantastic though. I'm having some perked Java now!

Agreed--
SuckageScript bad, caffeine good.
But birkie has my confidence if he says he can do it.

Birkie appreciate any thing you can do but don’t get sucked into a black hole trying to fix or figure out what to do here . It looks like you have a lot on your plate already.

Ha, technology I'm fine with. I'm not volunteering to do anything in particular about the human behaviour part . I just want to see what's possible. This is the sort of thing I might take a crack at when stranded in an airport or hotel room alone with my laptop and no kids.

You realize the total irony of this thread-- The very people it's directed to will never make the time or effort to see it before they post...... Sorry; I plead guilty. I collect old sewing machines so I do understand what a pain in the ass it is for people just to jump on forum with a problem already answered 50 times. . I did look for this specific answer but could not find it; but if it was already there and I missed it, I am sorry.
