Hello I'm in the process of replacing an old cracked two-prong cord with a three prong cord. Only problem would be where to stick the ground wire. Can I attach it to the closest metal object adjacent to the relay box where the original wire comes from or does it have to go down to the metal chassis.

That's a nice philco you have there. Yes, you are correct. Any metal mounting spot will work. However, make sure it isn't a refrigerant line, condenser plate or the compressor itself. That mistake has been made by a different member before. Also, I would use an ohm meter to make sure there isn't any path to ground between the two current prongs. Otherwise you have a short somewhere that needs to be addressed.

Thank you for the advice. There's actually a screw that anchors the power cord to the chassis to prevent it from being pulled loose. I figure I can screw the ground wire there since I'll be anchoring the new wire there and run the other two to the relay box There's also a hole next to one of the legs that isn't far, I can always use that as well. Does that make sense?

Yes, that makes sense. Of course you will have to be careful of the other wiring in the fridge. When you change out that cord it will more than likely disturb the other wires and the insulation will crumble. Just be careful and pay close attention to where everything goes and what condition it is in. It makes no sense to plug in a fire hazard. Ask me how I know.

Thanks CK. I was actually thinking of having one of the local appliance repair guys do it just to make sure he checks it. It sounds a bit extravagant but if I'm going to invest the time and material in restoring it a little extra investment I think is justified.
