I went to Travis's house yesterday and helped him organize his garage. Of course this means that a few things had to be put out to the curb. I couldn't let one thing go though even though I should have. This thing is so ugly that a 19th Century British Officer wouldn't have done it the service of shooting it in the head with his express rifle. Here you can see it bundled up in the back seat of my Honda Civic. It looks like a strange deranged DR2 Open evaporator head put onto a mysterious box. I will take more pictures later when I get the chance. This thing is super weird. It looks like somebody in the backwoods decided to take the deck and evaporator from a DR2, a 1950s compressor of unknown origin, a static steel condenser coil (which is just loosely angled out the back of the "box"), and a capillary tube and put this contraption together. At least it has a nice thermostat which seems functional. The capillary tube broke off right at the liquid line entrance of the evaporator. I really want to practice my "repair" skills on this ugly beast and get it working again. What gets me is that they completely bypassed the float valve even though there is still a hole where it should be. How did they know what length to make the capillary tube? What kind of compressor is in this thing? What kind of refrigerant and how much of that refrigerant did they fill this thing up with? Did it ever work right? Here you can see this monstrosity sitting upside down in the back of my car. I need my friends help to get it into the shed, preferably under the cover of night under a full moon. Drew, I need you to help me with this thing! drive.google.com/open?id=0B8_jm7K-ahMaQjZ0MmZwY19fR28

I remember this one, it sure did look like somebody did whatever they had to to make it cool. I bet the compressor is R12 and the put on the cap tube to make it work.

I'm glad you remembered this little gem. Now I need to see if I can put it back together and get it working! I need a really rusty and ratty cabinet for it to go onto. People would be amazed that it even works.

Ha, it almost looks like a bundled-up E.T. (the extraterrestrial) in that picture

Sounds like the perfect project to practice on; nothing to lose if it doesn't work out. The cap tube length was most likely taken from a chart related to compressor horsepower. It's when 'weird' refrigerants are used that it has to be done purely by trial and error. My guess it was just easier to install a known length of cap tube than worry about if the float valve would work with R12. Maybe the compressor & cap tube might have been pulled together out of a 'modern' fridge.

Maybe the compressor & cap tube might have been pulled together out of a 'modern' fridge. That is a good point. I bet they got the length from a chart since R12 was so standard. There is certainly nothing to loose with this setup. If I can make it work I'll have gained valuable skills QED will have the ugliest working fridge on the block!

You HAD the ugliest fridge, the avocado green one! That fridge got down to 34 regularly...after a few hours. But it's not as cold as that post!

Would have liked to have seen the whole thing-- You mean the franken fridge top? The photo makes it look like franken fridge is trying to hide from the press photographers; it's barely a glimpse.

Would have liked to have seen the whole thing-- You mean the franken fridge top? Yeah; how or what compressor they used as a sub for the DR original. One of those big old Tecumseh compressors? Some of them had 3 pints oil capacity, might have side-stepped the oil return problems with the tiny modern compressors. If it ever worked at all. Or didn't blow up from poor oil return.......

The compressor still runs and is dead silent due to the line being broken. You just hear air moving. I have no idea what the brand is.
