Some of you may remember a few months back I posted quite a few craigslist ads from all over the country. A lot of them were local to the St Louis and Southeast Missouri area though. I have been eyeing a tidy 1928 or so DRA2. It really looks nice. Only problem is that the owner says that it cools but doesn't get cold. Sounds like a restriction to me. Anyways, I kind of toyed with the idea of contacting the seller but never did due to me thinking that I have too many fridges as is. That was long before this past weekend when I brought 9 more home. A few weeks ago I noticed that the ad had been taken down. I don't know why but I posted a wanted ad in the same section that the ad appeared asking the seller, if he would see it, if he had sold the machine and if he could contact me if he hadn't. I have no clue if he saw the ad or not but low and behold the other day he posted another ad for it. So I contacted him and asked him about it. He sent me a few pictures of it. It looks really good. He has dropped the price to $150. It doesn't have any defrost chiller tray or racks (bummer) but the cabinet and the top look good. Apparently it does run ok, it just needs to have its restriction cleared. This all happened after I brought home the 9 fridges this past weekend. So I have been reluctant to go and grab another one. I asked Travis about it and he told me that he couldn't give me advice on it. That was until he saw my wanted ad and then he guilt tripped me into going for it. I have confirmed with my friend Drew that he will help me get it when we move his CK unit over to his garage. He is a very good and long suffering friend. Hey, I've been thinking about it for this long. I might as well join the tall control / pig evap club while I can. Besides, it is a small unit! In fact it almost looks just like the unit pictured in the forum banner, you know, the color picture on the left. I just contacted the seller and asked if it is still available. We will see what happens. To view the photos in this post, please follow this link: drive.google.com/open?id=0B8_jm7K-ahMaVlA3QXhMblA4OGs

I just confirmed with the seller. It is still available and I can come pick it up next weekend. Oh boy, need to clear out some space in the laundry room. NOW I AM DONE COLLECTING FOR A LONG WHILE. Please, everyone, hold me to that. This stuff is addictive. Now I just need to find some racks that fit and a glass chiller tray. Then I will pray to the monitor top gods that it doesn't have a bad restriction.

I bought a DRA2 also. It's a very early "Icing Unit". I bought it from a guy in California who delivered it to my cousin in Fontana, CA. He spends his summers here with us. So, he's going to be bringing it with him as he heads to Ohio in a couple weeks. Hopefully, it works properly. We'll find out.

I'm excited that it is an "icing unit". I feel very privileged to be able to obtain such a piece of history.

Hmm.
"Refrigerating machine" vs "Icing Unit".

Don't worry, I have a few refrigerating machines that I love too. Just got done rewiring a Westinghouse refrigerating machine last night!

Sad news everyone,
I am not going to be picking up the DRA after all. There have been a few financial situations present themselves to me in the past few weeks that are mounting up. For one thing, a damn vulture hit my windshield and I need to get that fixed. I calculated the cost of a truck (almost $300) and the amount of the fridge itself $150 (which is a steal) and I just can't afford it right now. Besides that, I would barely have room for it. It would be possible to make room for it but it would be difficult. I think I am just going to have to step away from this sale and cool my jets. I just need to be happy about what I am already lucky enough to have. If I get some help tonight I am going to put the CA on its cute little cabinet and start to clean it up. Sometimes you have to just know when to walk away. I wish I could have gotten it but this just makes more financial sense to me right now. After all, I'm just a poor guy right out of college looking for his first "real" job.
So, if any of you want a cute little DRA2 in the southeast Missouri region, I know where you can get one!

Ok, disregard that last post. I actually AM going to pick up this machine tomorrow. Travis convinced me to go for it and pointed out that I could get the cargo van instead of the truck. That is going to cut my uhaul bill in half. Now I can pick this thing up and not totally break the bank. I may have to get creative for my meal choices next week though! Just kidding, it won't be that bad. It is amazing how much more expensive a truck is vs a cargo van. Hopefully the move goes well tomorrow. I'm about to join the "tall control / pig evap" club.

Yes Ray, you have a problem. Your problem is that you don't know how to get an accurate quote from U-Haul! I have way too much experience with renting trucks and hiring movers. If I can get an entire bedroom set in a cargo van, you can fit a tiny DRA2.

Glad you found a way. I was contemplating how to make room in the garage for it if you were unable to save it.

I am about to succumb to the same affliction. Ugh.... There is a cute little DRA-2-D for sale up in Michigan. It is a 500 mile drive (each way) for me and I'm trying to figure out how to transport the thing cheaply. It is a porcelain cabinet with wood around the door opening. Tall control, pig evaporator. Exterior is in fine shape, even the top looks clean, but need repainting to have it in "like new" condition. The evaporator looks like new, all racks are present but no chiller tray. The inside of the cabinet looks like someone tried to paint it, also has a big chip at the bottom just inside the door, it needs to be cleaned, possibly taken to he porcelain shop for a re-do. The machine runs and cools fine. The present owner used it for about 15 years. Asking 375.00. Any thoughts and/or comments would be most welcome.

That looks like a winner to me. Go for it! The fact that it has all the racks and is in such good shape is very nice. You can't argue with the price if it runs and cools too.

Dave,
You're going to have to post the refrigerator on uship.com and see if you can find a shipper that is willing to bring it to you.

Thanks Travis! Excellent Idea. I have to post a few more images. These old machines are so cool. From what I have just read on some of the history of Monitor Top articles, this DRA-2-D was manufactured in 1928. It was a smaller unit that was intended for the apartment market. The interesting thing is that our property was built as a 22 room mansion with 3-car garage and chauffer's apartment overhead. In 1928, it was converted to 8 apartments. One of the BIG features was "Electric Refrigeration", no doubt, GE Monitor Tops, and most likely, DRA-2 models. Since this was considered to be deluxe accommodations, I'm guessing that they were porcelain cabinets too! So, I think it would be really cool to have one of these back in the building. My apologies for hijacking a post.... but... all on the same subject and I hope CkFan doesn't mind.

Dave,
It looks nice. There's a big piece of tape on the control. Let's hope that the bakelite isn't broken on that. You have all three shelves, I only have one, Doug has one and Ray has none! Mine runs and cools. It needs a heater. I have been to lazy to replace it.
If you need help with uship let me know.
