Allan's opinion was the rattle was actually likely the inlet checkvalve chattering. If that's the case I doubt it has anything to do with refrigerant condensing inside the compressor housing.

Now that I've run both machines through winter and summer, it seems to me there's two separate things that cause rattle (by whatever means the mechanical noise is produced - if it is the inlet valve, then I could see that liquid refrigerant on the low side could make it more noisy). Cold room temperature is one. My CA-1 is more prone to this, but the CA-2 will also do it under colder conditions (<15C)and more quietly. As an experiment, I tried running the CA-1 heater at a higher voltage and that made an improvement. So, that's suggestive of refrigerant condensing in the dome when cold. The other cause of rattle appears simply to be high head pressure - maybe once in a while on a warm day, and it only lasts a few seconds just after the compressor starts. The compressor sound on both CA's is very dependent on room temp. GE must have had so many customer enquiries during changeable weather.

John asked me to post these pictures. What I'm wondering is, if we find the CA can run on this stuff, how can us smaller guys get some?

Thanks Chris for posting those pics for me! The 1st pic is the 50 lb steel drum of R123. The second picture is the beginning of the filling process with a beaker of 123 ready to go in.

Well that's reasonable enough on a per-pound basis.
But that much at once kind of hurts.
And be aware, the drums will not stand cold ambient, they will flex and bend under vacuum and perforate at the bends.
It would totally suck to get in for $1000 and lose it in the garage or shop over the winter.
Of course the 30 Lb bottle will do fine.

Well I ran the guinea pig for a while today. Gets down to 15 deg evap in 3 minutes and 6 deg evap in 5 minutes in open air sitting on the floor. It's quiet and run amps at start up were 2.58 and quickly settle down to 2.2 in just a minute. (135 watts). It's kind of a rough looking unit, so I'm gonna clean it up a bit, rewire it and put a good t-stat on it this weekend. Then I'll put it on a box turn it on and give er a whirl, and see what happens.

Oh. I forgot to mention. It does have a little bit of the CA rattle. Only lasts for about 5 seconds when first started.

Something tells me no matter what you do, there will always be some rattle and run times will always be 4-5 minutes for a size 2 unit. the CA will never, ever compete with a CK.

I wouldn't say always - give it the right room temp and they run very quiet, even at the start of the cycle. But they can never be as efficient as a CK simply because of the heater drawing power all the time.

John, you know it's not just the heater. The CK machines transfer more heat while drawing the same power, if I recall? 2-3 minute run times is something I don't think a size 2 CA machine will ever see with a 70F room temp.
I suppose, it's not really fair to compare them as it's like saying a Model T will never be a Model A.

I agree with Chris here. You can't expect either a DR or a CA to perform like a CK. We're dealing with the evolution of monitor tops here. You choose what model you want and deal with the flaws of that design.

Travis, So those who choose a CK deal with unbelievably efficient cooling and silence? I guess us CA and DR owners always root for the underdog to win eh?

I'll be honest. The SO2 scares me.
