I have a gigantic, heavy, old R22 type hotpoint chest freezer. I got it free because it had quit. The RCO had burned out, and I replaced it. I want a heavy, old, brute force RCO more appropriate for a monster '50s unit... Maybe with real points and a beefy cap... Possibly a real circuit timer. Ideas?

The old Copeland "start package" used with the semi-hermetics is a nice piece of work, start cap, run cap, relay, in a package that connects with 3 wires. Assuming you can find a space to mount it. I put one on my submersible well pump motor, it's more efficient and works much better than the little printed circuit card relay that came with the pump controller. You would need a separate overload, preferably in the compressor terminal box (so it can sense compressor temperature as well as current). Nice thing about these is it operates by sensing the start winding voltage (which rises as motor comes up to speed), so you don't have to try to set it for motor size or current rating, it will work with pretty much any split-phase motor of the same voltage. (You will need the 110v version I assume).

I've used Supco's 3-in-1 units, look on their website. Works good when the O.E.M. Parts are no longer available. Just use the size that matches your compressor HP.

Sounds like maybe that was what was on it, (something without "real points") that burned out. Which they are inclined to do. There was a recall a couple of years ago on several "brands" of refrigerators all made by the same company, that used PTC solid state relays as OEM. They had a nasty habit of setting the kitchen cabinets on fire when they failed. Some people just get so damn bitchy when something like that happens.........
