I am picking up an old 50's vintage ice cream freezer this weekend. I forget the brand, Schafer I think... found it on craigslist a couple months ago and had a friend in the area go fetch it for me. Story is it runs and cools very well but the thermostat is bad and has been wired around so it runs all the time, it was only used to hold ice cream for the guy's wedding reception, so not run month after month like that. It supposedly comes with a replacement thermostat not yet installed. I'm curious about updating it with a thermostat with a digital temp display if their is such a thing? Perhaps not necessary but if I have to work on it already now is a good time to consider that. Yes, I cold use a plain old thermometer inside, suppose nothing wrong with that idea.. Anything I should know, or look out for when I do get it and start working on it? I'll use it for holding home made ice cream. We've already made probably 30 gallons this season, and another 6 gallons to make for this weekend. Idea of a thermometer is I'd like to easily see what temp it is, feel how hard/soft the ice cream is, and over time figure out and adjust the temp to suit for good dipping and occasionally adjust it cold/hard enough to transport the ice cream some distance in a cooler. Thanks, Grigg

Not sure about what there is for digital but i might be able to look up your part number in my ranco cross reference. Thats an old Kelvinator isn't it?
I see now you said Schafer brand. Looks like a Kelvinator emblem in the pic

OK, I'm back. Too many projects and not enough time. I picked up the freezer from my friend just over a month ago at an old truck show. it is a Schaefer, cabeniet serial number 5-011-015 and shown in the 1956 catalog as model number 2S-12 Also at the show was another friend who is a refrigeration tech and enjoys old stuff as much or more than I do. He checked it out thoroughly and determined that the existing (recent replacement) thermostat is indeed bad or the wrong model. Without the thermostat in the loop the machine runs and cools excellent (I forget the temps). He said there are no problems at all with the refrigeration side of it. It is an 1800 RPM motor and because their is no fan the thing is close to dead silent when running, it's nice. Having thought about it I can't see any real reason not to just replace the thermostat with one similar to original, so I need to find a part number and source for that. I also need to find or make a little cover for the terminals on the compressor.

My books do not list the Schafer brand. Too bad you don't have the part # that I might find. This one here might work it has a coldest off temp of -30 warmest on temp is 12, differential is 13. www.johnstonesupply.com/storefront/product-view.ep?pID=B11-410I cut one of these copressor open a while back,I might still have the cover for that compressor, will have to look and see if I can find it. Might have pitched it, don't remember for sure.

Thanks, I'll look closely at the parts I have. It came with pieces or parts of a thermostat but I'm not sure if it is the original, another replacement, or just extra parts from the existing non functioning one. So far I've had no luck finding any sort of parts or service info on these Schaefer branded ice cream cabinets. I've found a fair amount of sales adds though, and mention somewhere that they were a branch of Studebaker, and aren't much older than about 1950.
If you do find that little cover I'd obviously be pleased to have it, just let me know the details.

Your welcome. I should think the control I linked should work unless yours needs more than 13 degree differential to let the pressures in the system balance out. My IH freezer had a 16 differential and I could not find a control like it. Ended up buying the 13 and re calibrating it.
As for the cover I think it is on the old compressor in my storage bin. Will get there to look in the next few days.

Unfortunately it looks like I threw the cover in the scrap and it is already gone. It was not on the old compressor. If I find it laying around the garage some where I will let you know.

I have one of those compressor terminal covers left over. If it's important enough to you for you to send postage, I'll send it to you.

OK, long time no post.. and no progress on the freezer until now. I'd been working on other projects including refitting the ice cream maker with a new 20 QT freezer. With the new capacity I need to get this old freezer sorted out. Blackhorse, I'll send you a message about the cover, hope I'm not too late. The incorrect/inoperable freezer control that the last owner tried to install is a Ranco A30-304 with a -22 to 19.5 range and differential of 15.5. The remnants of the old probably original one has N75 and Set -15 TO -2 and BQ-EO On the other side is a larger printed "16". At least best I can read, might be -2 something and the last O might be a Q. I hope this is enough to pinpoint a suitable replacement. If not then back to the first question about a digital control, would something like this be adaptable? www.etcsupply.com/ranco-etc111000000-digital-temperature-controller-p-86.htmlAgain, sorry for the long pause in the thread and my progress, and thanks for the helpful info. Any brand name on the original control? I have found a few # crossed in an old Gemline catalog I will post latter. They are for a Schaffer brand with 2 fs, might be a typo? None match what you have so far. Also a few n-# in an old Ranco book of mine but not n75.

I looked through the little Schaefer sales catalog I have and didn't see a model number 2 FS or anything that had the same number/letter format. Closest was a GFS-99 or GFS-112, which are "Glass Front Open Top Merchandising Cabinets". Pretty sure the one I have is just a 2S-12, "Twelve Gallon Single Row Chest" the smallest they show in the 1956 catalog. No other markings or brand on the old control that I can see. Perhaps these pictures look familiar enough to another you have seen to then guess the brand?

Here is what I have from my Gemline catalog on the Schaffer brand. I am not sure this is the same co. as yours or not. And none of the numbers look like they will help.
