Hello fellow antique fridge (and other antique appliance) enthusiasts, I have come across a small treasure trove at a used furniture/appliance store and wanted to pass it along...
The store: Mike's Cut Rate Furniture, Vero Beach, Florida, 772-567-2000. According to the owner, some items may be listed on the store’s Facebook page.
Fridges: • One gold 60s Kenmore top freezer - reportedly runs/cools, seems complete and in good condition, $300. • One gold 60s Montgomery Ward side by side - reportedly runs/cools, seems complete and in good condition, $300. • One blue 1964 GE Americana (top fridge-middle counter-bottom drawer freezer) fridge - reportedly runs, but doesn't cool, with no lights or fans working in the interior. Seems in good condition otherwise. $1000.
I have a couple images available upon request, I don't have a 3rd party image host yet.
I realize these fridges are probably too new for most people on this forum but I would really hate to see old quality American–built fridges possibly get scrapped/junked. The store also has some old ranges/stoves (gas & electric) from the 30s-60s, old washers from the 1910s-30s and other old small household appliances and electronics. The store is supposed to be closing by late December (but probably before Christmas) so there's not much time to act if you're interested. All items are cash only.
So glad I found this forum, when I get the chance I'll post about my collection!

Thanks for sharing the news about these here! If you resize the pictures so that they are smaller than 1 megabyte, they can be uploaded on this forum. I find it strange that they are wanting over twice as much for the nonworking fridge. Did you mean $100 and not $1000? That won't be worth much not cooling. Sincerely, David

Hi David, glad to share the info! Hopefully I have attached the images correctly... No mistake in the pricing, $1000 for the non-working Americana. The owner of the store collected and kept these items for 48+ years and apparently decided earlier this year to sell the collection and retire/close the store. I definitely feel the pricing of everything is high but then again it is not often that a collection becomes available... Anyway, if anyone has contacts in/with old washer or old stove forums, please share!
Matt

Well, an update for everyone - I bought one of them/er, it followed me home in my trailer... The Kenmore top freezer.
The nameplate says Kenmore Coldspot. And I was able to negotiate a lower than asking price. After getting it home, I looked it up and it seems that it was most likely made in 1976 or possibly as late as 1983. Definitely not 60s though. Oh well, it's still American made, working, gives my collection some color and, doesn't have to be rewired!

Please verify that the condenser fan is in good shape. The compressors on these tend to fail after running with a bad fan. It might be a good idea to replace the fan prophylactically. Sincerely, David

Thanks David, I will definitely be checking the condenser fan.
Probably my local appliance repair/parts company will be able to help me get a new one since it's only ~47 years old. They were able to replace a bad compressor in my 1978 Amana with a new old stock compressor and get parts for my same year Whirlpool stove.
I too like to be proactive and replace parts (when available) before they become issues. I say it doesn't need rewiring since it feels like a "modern" refrigerator to me [3 years older than me]. The exposed wiring seems undamaged and pliable and it of course has a ground wire system.
I do think the R-12 systems work really well and cool better than the R-134a systems. Actually, all the older refrigerant systems seem to work better. Not sure yet on the R-600/600a/290 systems but I do like the low operating pressures.

I don't think Sears started combining the Kenmore badge with Coldspot until the very late '70s, and they probably dropped Coldspot altogether by 1980 or so. My parents' 1975 forced draft side-by-side from Sears was a Coldspot. Nothing about Kenmore anywhere on it.

You're right, I read that 1976 was the year they started the transition to Kenmore.
