It worked fine for a week then wilted. I'll try again this weekend to look for clues and follow steps. My attempt at hot water in evaporator box did not help.

David,
If the unit runs and cools and cycles sometimes, it can't be that low on refrigerant.

It was a stuck float the first time. So it seems likely it’s not working right. On mine you definitely here what sounds like water going through the evaporator when it’s running. If the float is stuck closed I wouldn’t think you would here this .

Where in the country are you? It is possible there is somebody nearby to help out. There is a running theory that the float on some CKs has a pin that eventually wears nearly through and starts sticking/binding, but there's not enough information to conclude that one way or another. How is the machine doing now?

Hello everyone, sorry I missed your recent responses Im still trying to figure this out. I live in Iowa City, Iowa. I have several connections to appliance, mechanical, and antiques professionals but only one of them has a fridge like mine. He does furniture restoration and woodworking and is even less tech savvy than I am... Haven't found any help yet. I'm thinking my fridge should leave my kitchen for further resucitation efforts. I also have another monitor top that I bought for parts maybe 15 years ago. It needs body work as well as mechanical attention. Anyone interested in a road trip?

Just to recap current status: My fridge makes a running sound but not the circulating liquid sound, no cooling at all but also not the extreme overheating. Tapping trick and hotwater bottle did not help.

Unfortunately, it will more than likely need some significant disassembly to be repaired.

Thanks, I'm making plans to move it to my friend's workshop where it will have two other nonworking models for company. Maybe we can become the technicians we wish were available here.

This is sad but at the same time comforting. Sad that it's not working; but comforting that you're putting it in safe storage where repairs could happen. I did my best to become that technician. It's been very rewarding to put my past skills back into use and share it here as well. Hopefully you and your friend can get the courage to tear into it and make some repairs to it!

If you look through this forum coldspaces among others have opened these old fridges up . I would look through his post and others to get an idea of what you’re up against.

Thank you all again. I appreciate your help. I've learned a lot already from your videos and threads. I also looked at the service manual someone loaded online which says my fridge was built in 1935. Not as old as I had expected. I shopped at a new appliance store last weekend and the clerk allowed how the refrigerator I will be buying "definitely won't last as long...."

Ginny when you move this to storage you might pull the top and hang it upside down and rap the float area again. It might break the float free but it would probably be a temporary fix .
