I figured that might be the case. I’m very glad that you were able to test and confirm the theory of filling one up with air duster though. Good to know.

Oh well - at least it was confirmed dead in the name of science. Thanks for trying and sharing the results!

I wonder if Stay Brite 8 will stick to it. All the corrosion would nee to be cleaned good first. One would have to wrap the bellows maybe in a wet paper towel to protect it from overheating. I sure never tied it before.
I just looked at one I have from a CA model, it looks like the bellows lifts up out of the mounting base if one removes a nut on the sensing tube side.

Got the bellows out of the cup. Have inspected some and am as of yet unable to find a visible weakness. I will test with air can again to see if spring loaded armiture was just too much pushing on bellows to hold fluid.
There is another late 30s GE flat top a few cities over. Listed for $75 not running. Same cold control. Im considering looking at it and grabbin it if the temp control clicks on andni can budget it. I am hesitant though because i dont have space to store multiple machines.

Ranco for the win!!!!
Alright fellas so i got the ranco a30-180 and put it on there and it works! We have a functioning on off/adjust. I wanted to double check a few things to make sure im all set.
True or false: it doesnt matter which lead on the back of the thermostat connects to double black and which one connects to green.
The ranco therm/switch came with a super long sensing tube. I ran it to the clamp then coiled the excess alongside the evaporator. That what most people do? Also, the tube is a bit skinnier And doesnt snug down under the clamp. Ideas to remedy?
Im so excited to have finally resurrected this machine! Now onto gaskets and such!

Glad you got it working. The senseing tube sounds like you need some kind of shim , or not sure of how its held onto evaporator but maybe you could close up the clamp on it a little bit.

Yes, I agree with herb. I would put a shim in to get the tube to clamp down right. As far as the thermostat goes, it doesn’t matter which wire goes where. Just treat it as a simple single pole single throw switch.
