Sure does, is that some kind of glob top they show in the drawings? This is from one of the # listed on the tag.Looks like an update on the one you found. www.google.com/patents/US2394409

I noticed that globe top thing too, but it's just a cross section of the piston. As you say, it looks like what you actually have is an updated version.

Oh ya just what I needed another project. Was told last Sunday by the wife "nothing else old comes home" good thing I have a storage bin. Was owned by a regular customer of mine for that last 42 years, made in 1952. Start relay died and they decided not to fix it. Price Free. I love the way it is not so deep and things are easier to find in it. Problem is the insulation has water in it for sure. I would love to re insulate it and use it myself or figure out a way to dry the insulation and seal any moisture leaks. Not sure I could get it apart to re insulate.

Once you do the repair can you take some power measurments? I always hear people claiming old freezers are energy pigs and I don't see how that makes sense. They are never frost free and never have any special options. Its the same thing as a modern one as far as I can tell.

Pretty sure it is only an energy hog because the insulation got wet. I would love to get it apart and reinsulate with foam, pretty sure 4" of foam on all sides and it would hardly ever run.

Well I have been trying to decide what to do with this old chest freezer. Former owner said water ran out of the cabinet for 2 days after it warmed up so the fiberglass was full of frost for sure. My first thought was to try to get the top opened up and see if I could feasibly get the inner liner out. I lifted the seal up at this corner and found the top is closed solid, I think with sheet metal bolted or welded to the liner. It was then poured full of sealant to keep moisture from getting into the top. I am sure trying to dismantle it and put it back together would be near impossible. I know the seal would be destroyed for sure. I am pretty sure almost all of the water vapor made its way in at the grommet for the suction line and maybe a little were they sealed it from outside. These areas were sealed with the press on gum and the suction line grommet was not sealed at all anymore. Also when I tipped it the one corner was leaking water out. I left it tipped to the leaky corner for about 24 hours and let all the water I could drain out. After it drained I sealed the corners and the grommet. If you look you will see there is an extra 1/4" tube stuck through the grommet. I wondered about tying to pull a vacuum and draw out the moisture but was afraid the walls might suck in if it is air tight enough. Even wondered if the vacuum might suck loose old sealer and create more leaks. In the end after thinking about it I decided to use an extra 5/8" sight glass/ moisture indicator I have had for years. I had already adapted the 1/4" to 5/8" and flared it before I put it in the grommet. I was also given 3 old stock new 30 cu in filter driers a few weeks ago. Since I don't ever use 5/8" driers and don't know how long they have sat around I decided to use 1 or more of them to try to draw out the moisture. Thought you all might be interested to see my idea of how to dry out this old freezer. The Sporland drier I hooked up can hold 751 drops of water at 70F. I may take it off and try to heat it up in a toaster oven and use it more than once. Not sure if I will get it dry enough to turn the sight glass green or not, we'll have to wait and see.

Interesting project - I hadn't seen this thread until now. You'd probably be able to pull some vacuum before the walls deform which would help, but the driers are a novel idea. At least it hasn't got paper insulation.

I should have started a new thread for this but didn't. You are right about that, if paper it would never be right. With fiberglass I stand a chance of drying it out I think.

How is this project going? I'm curious how much water actually came out?

I don't know how much drained out of this thing in total. As I said it drained for 2 days before I got it. I have left the first drier on it for 2 days then took it off and sealed it and the line. Need to try to bake the drier and rejuvenate it if possible and put it back on again. Problem is this unit is in my storage bin (wife still doesn't know I have this) and it will now be below freezing for a while, I am sure not much will come out then. I may have to get the garage cleaned up and bring it home, not sure how I will explain having it.

Some guys hide girlfriends or money from their wives. Us? We hide antique appliances.

Well I brought the chest freezer home to the garage today. Wife still hasn't been told about it yet. Got it behind the GE Spacemaker and a few other things. Plan to get it rewire and new start relay soon. Not sure all the moisture is out of the insulation yet so will be trying to dry it further also.
When it is ready it is going in the basement, hopefully before she knows I own it. Might be hard to pull off now that is is in the garage. Been hinting that we need a little larger freezer the last few months. She went and checked out new ones the other day. Better get this ready before she buys one.
