Honestly, as much as I like history, I don't want a belt drive system with SO2 in my house. Eventually the seal has to wear. There's some rubber in the seal, a steel face and a bronze face.
You're right, price must have kept them in the market. I have a smaller Universal refrigerator from the late 1930's that has an R12 belt drive compressor.

I believe for automotive 1oz per year was considered standard with R12. 2 vehicles ago I had an R12 system that I ended up rebuilding and converting to R134A mainly because the compressor was actually worn out @ 200K miles.
