What are the hinges made of ? Could it be built up with weld or something similar and then ground or machined back down ? Agree the bushing is not really noticeable. Very nice job!
Thanks! The hinges are solid brass. They could be built up. The problem is, the entire thing was chrome plated and that would be destroyed if the hinge was heated up for that level of braze repairing. The bushings are white like the rest of the cabinet, and I don't consider them to be very obtrusive. Travis had an idea of turning the bushing down smaller, and placing a short segment of chrome plated pipe around the outside of the nylon. That would give it a more matching finish to the existing hinge.

David,
I’m just advocating always parting out a fridge to gain parts, but to be practical, that’s how you get parts.
I have a painted 35/36 in the garage with issues. I’m sure it could be restored, but to what market?
I’ll get back in there and steal it’s hinges later this week. Or if you want to build those up, let’s rechrome them. It’s your choice.

Yeah I understand - it's much better to part something out than to let it rot away. I'm just accustomed to not having any parts available and having to make do with what's on-hand.....
So is that 35/36 with "issues" the one which gave you a glorious shower of sparks and anointed your abode with the fragrance of SO2?

It’s one that sounds rough and trips the overload if I recall. I’m fairly certain it has those hinges.
You can’t save them all, though I try. As long as most value these things as less than $200, it’s impossible.

I think I still have the compressor that shot sparks. Travis had me put a r12 compressor he had on that Westy.

It does seem the original compressor for mine possibly met the same fate. It appears to have a rebuilt unit..... or "recertified" as the decal states. The terminals appear to have been cut out and replaced. You can see the brazing in the picture below. If you look below the wiring, the side of the motor shell is discolored from heat, as if that was from the brazing process.

Just an update on the Westinghouse. It's still chillin' and there's no loss of frost line, no oil showing up anywhere, and the control is working perfectly.
My parents stopped by for a visit and dad was very impressed with the condition of the cabinet, and the art-deco styling.
